Review # 1 was written on 2020-06-15 00:00:00 Nicky Dark A fascinating and concise account of the balancing act performed by Elizabeth Tudor between the enmity of Philip II of Spain, the Puritans, The Pope, and the intractability of her own parliament. The results are reflected in the richness of the literature of the time and the stability of the legacy left to James I. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-09-20 00:00:00 Paul Pace Elizabeth I and the Unity of England by Joel Hurstfield. I really enjoyed reading this! Very short, only about 150 pages. Finished it within a day. ~ The book summarises Elizabeth I's political life. She was an efficient and influential ruler. Not very successful at times but managed to get things done. Incredibly pragmatic, too. The book also highlights her dependable advisors, particularly William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley. ~ This copy is 50 years old, can you believe it? The pages are very browned. However, very clean, very well-maintained and still quite precious. |
