Harpur is a favorite of mine, but this is perhaps his "masterwork." It's a wonderful synthesis of Neoplatonism, paranormal phenomena, Carl Jung, folklore, and imagination. Imagination is not just a way of being creative in the world of Daimonic Reality--it is an active and vital force that plays through our lives and shapes the world in ways...that we can hardly imagine. I would recommend this book, as well as George P. Hansen's The Trickster and the Paranormal to anyone seeking to expand their ideas on the nature of reality. Both are truly astounding works.

I found this book at a good time because it agrees with the current direction of my thinking about paranormal phenomena. Harpur got there over 20 years ago and pulled a lot together. Daimonic Reality suggests a framework for understanding more than just typical paranormal phenomena but also psychology, anthropology, and metaphysics. In the 1960s, John Keel, after investigating a lot of UFO sightings, began to smell a rat. He realized that UFOs were connected with other paranormal events like poltergeists and weird creatures. He saw the resemblance between aliens and faeries. His hypothesis was there were intelligences behind the phenomena which he termed Ultraterrestrials. Harpur goes beyond that. While recognizing the same similarities, he sees these phenomena as something that's always with us. He calls it Daimonic Reality which is another way of looking at Jung's Collective Unconscious, the Anima Mundi, etc. Reading this book was a fun journey and food for much thought.
