I was surprised at how insightful this book was. Seeing as it was written in the seventies. I've read a lot of books on depression, but this got me thinking about it in a different way. To be honest, the first half of the book is exceptional, then it starts to get slightly less interesting as it goes on, and more detached. But even for the first half, it was well worth reading. I found his exercises fascinating, that help you to access feeling in the lower half of your body, getting your legs to vibrate involuntarily. It's amazing how much we tend to live in the upper half of our bodies and ignore the lower half, preventing ourselves from being grounded in reality. The other aspect that intrigued me was his exploration of 'faith'. I always thought of faith as only referring to religion, but he talks about faith as a general concept. Faith in ourselves. In our bodies. That you can't live your entire life in your mind. That it's important to have faith in what your body is expressing. Strangely, it helped make sense of my past religious experiences with letting go of the control of my body, enabling it to vibrate and shake with the feelings it had been suppressing. And it explains why that felt so good. All in all, a very interesting read. Something that has made quite an impact on me.
