I first read this book over twenty years ago. It was, at the time, one of the most impactful books I had ever read. Ever since it has informed how I live. In the Spirit of the Earth is an exploration of deep time and the shifting relations of humankind to the natural world. It is a book that helped me to obtain a glimpse of another way of being in the world for humans that is far removed from our consumer culture lifestyles. If you are questioning how we in Westernised cultures can ever live lightly on this planet, then this book will offer perspectives that may well broaden you thinking. It does not provide practical solutions such as eat less meat or install solar panels. Instead, it does something far more valuable. The book questions the foundations upon which our unsustainable lifestyles are based. And, usefully, it shows a radically different way of relating to the world around us that is more respectful of and more engaging in life. I have just finished re-reading this book. It is still a five star offering. I will finish with one of my favourite quotes from the book: If humanity is foing to find a way out of this enchanted realm, we will have to first speak an aperture, then from that creative word follow a course vastly different from that preached by all the messiahs, religious and secular, who have pitched their message within an agricultural and pastoral metaphysic. My time (my past, present, and future) lies right here, smack on the back of this slowly paddling, continental plate, not in some fantasy heaven or equally fantastic hell, or any other Middle Eastern narrative. My being, my real and true economy, is in the humus of forests and parklands and open plains, in spiritual commerce with beaver and bear and deer and other animal beings resident there and performing so ably, so brilliantly, within those myriad communities of lands and seas and lands. There stands that shimmering biped, Homo - and there is Homo's salvation.

This is a very well written book, written in a way that speaks to a profound topic - the human condition. Highly recommended to anyone who believes in more than what society would have them believe. If you love the earth and recognize your connection to the earth and all life you will enjoy this book and walk away feeling refreshed.
