By no means a completist work, this nevertheless is a valuable insight to the computer science of the time and a terrific general introduction to assembly programming from an excellent teacher. Some of the mechanisms of the pdp-11 were novel and the in-depth coverage of how the instruction set actually worked is widely applicable. Like other works on the subject, it's based on the RT-11 macro 11 assembler, but you need to study that assembler's interaction with RT-11 or RSX-11, it's not sufficient for your needs. I recommend Assembly Language for the PDP-11 which will cover other areas specific to that assembler and some details on the extended instruction set which this book doesn't cover. For my purposes, understanding the working of the general instruction set and how Unix applied it, this book was perfect. It teaches pdp-11 programming idiom and has a most useful detailed description of each instruction in an appendix.

Beautiful photos and commentary from Hepburn herself. I loved going back and seeing a portrait of her again.
