Review # 1 was written on 2014-12-18 00:00:00 Lucio Marchioro It's getting harder to review each volume of this history without repeating myself endlessly. I'm all out of adjectives to describe this series: magisterial, mammoth, titanic, comprehensive, long-winded. Foner is again in good form here, covering some crucial years in the labor movement, especially the U.S. government's mostly successful efforts to crush the IWW, the socialist party, and most international solidarity in the U.S. labor movement broadly. These actions would resonate with the US labor movement all the way to the present day. Foner covers them well in his usual academic style. The larger problem with all these books is that they do not offer much in the way of overarching analysis of what is happening. Instead we are treated to description of event after event with little stitching that might show us how one thing relates to another. You get a sense of his perspective by his persistent criticism of Samuel Gompers and the AFL, but he seems reticent to just fully lay his cards on the table. Still, I don't want to be overly critical. I think this whole series is a valuable resource for people interested in labor history, especially if you're willing to read supplementary material.
