Review # 1 was written on 2011-09-21 00:00:00 Miguel A. Medrano Its a good book to learn the history of Jazz and how modern music relates to it. I learned for instance, that Jazz can trace its linage to military brass bands from the Civil War. So it's literally a musical phenomena that has been going on for centuries. But it is a tad boring at first for someone who is not particularly into music or already knows the history well. In either case, its a good read and comes with its sound track of Jazz music. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-01-30 00:00:00 Gerald Panneton Frustratingly, this book omits published essays from the time period and also some of the included essays have been re-edited. Would be nicer to have the exact versions that were originally published and W.B. could have included introductions or notes to comment on any changes he would have made. And of course, many of the longer biographical pieces are in other Balliett books. This is a case where a well-thought-out two- or three-volume set in strict chronological order would make a lot of sense. |
