Sadly this book is outdated and hasn't received a new edition in quite some time. As a consequence some of the topics are no longer relevant and in a few cases no longer accurate. This is a real shame since the content of the book is at times very, very good. Ironically for the beginner to computer science I'd avoid it. As a historical book however for a more intermediate or advanced student of computer science (who can tell which points and topics to skim) it has a fair bit of value.

Have not read all the short stories in this anthology of works from the 19th cen through today, but "The Life and Death of George Wilson" by Neil Patterson in here is one of my favorite short stories ever. It's "best of" anthology from the past 200 years so they're all really good.
