Have you ever wondered about your dreams? Why do they happen, what do they mean, can you control them? In this book, Stafford addresses all of these questions and more. She presents eleven short sections each covering a different aspect of dreaming beginning with why we dream, who dreams and how often, the stages of sleep, and moving into the history of dreams, what dreams mean, and how we can control and remember them. Some of the research that has been done to make these discoveries is also included and explained. This book was a great introduction to the complexity of dreams. It would be a perfect text for a sixth or seventh grader to use for a research project or similar assignment due to its high quality features such as the index and glossary. The visual aspect of this book is made up of black and white photographs and simple drawings which also help add to the solidification of information. The only thing that concerns me about this book is how long ago it was published, because science advances and changes so quickly that it is possibly some of the information presented may be outdated. Other than this, the facts seems to be very accurate and reliable due to the number of references listed in the bibliography and the explanations of how the research has been conducted with machines such as the EEG.

This lovely book was a real treat. It was Ellen Gilchrist's first published collection of short stories back in 1981, but the stories resonate just as clearly today. The characters are completely human; even though one doesn't always like them, their actions and words are dead on. If you haven't already, step into Gilchrist's world of the deep South and meet Rhoda, Nora Jane, and many, many more. Highly recommended.
