As the title states, this book contains three of Rendell's Chief Inspector Wexford stories, all of which had been previously published as standalone novels. The stories are: 1. Kissing the Gunner's Daughter: A policeman is killed during a bank robbery. A few weeks later, three members of a family are killed in an isolated mansion. To me, this story seemed like an episode of Midsomer Murders, especially as the body count rose. Even so, it was a good read. I gave it 4 stars out of 5. Finished: 2018-06-11. 2. Simisola: The daughter of an African doctor goes missing and he calls on Wexford for help. Then the last person to have seen her is murdered in her sick bed. Days later a prospector digs up the body of a young black girl. The many attempts to identify her all result in nothing. Who killed or abducted these women? Are the incidents connected? This well-crafted mystery remained until the last chapter. I gave it 4 stars out of 5. Finished: 2018-06-13. 3. Road Rage: A bypass is about to be built but there are a lot of objections and protests. Meanwhile, a number of people are reported missing, including Wexford's wife Dora. The kidnappers wanted the bypass closed down or they would start killing the hostages. But then Dora is released with a message. Who are the kidnappers/terrorists? Where are the holding the hostages? It kept me guessing until the second last chapter. I gave it 4 stars out of 5. Finished: 2018-06-16.

What makes this collection a must read is that it includes the short story Three Blind Mice that has been successfully adapted as play Mousetrap. The story has never been published in UK because then there will be no suspense and great end. Four stories in the collection feature Miss Marple, three Hercule Poirot and one Harley Quin. All the nine stories are full of suspense and mystery with a twisted end that leaves you marveling that how the author could write such an engrossing story in such a short story line. A must read for all her fans.
