(a) Book title: The Oceans Around US (b) Author: Kate Boehm Nyquist (c) Number of pages read: 32 pages (d) The question numbers: (10) and (15) (e) The questions: Question#10. As you read today, what surprised you? Explain how this will affect the story or how it changed your thinking about the story. As I read this book, three things surprised me. One is the various animals and plants underwater. Some animals look like plants and also name like the plant, like sea fans, I had saw it many times when I was snorkeling before, but I thought it was a kind of plants. Actually, they are groups of small animals, and eat organisms. Second thing surprised me is the ocean floor is not flat surface, it look just like land, and there are slopes, valleys, and even mountains underwater. Underwater is another marvelous world. The last thing surprised is we human have destroyed the ocean unwittingly. For instance, the missing fishing-net entangled the sea lion, and human like eat some species of fish and break the whole balance of the ocean. Many animals and plants live in this earth are relative and connect together. Our every actions or decision might bring effects to this earth. Question#15. Summarize the book. This book is a science book, it provide me many interesting information about another world—the ocean. In the beginning it use a baby sea turtles story introduce us to the ocean, because we will have an ocean trip with the green sea that just hatching form egg. First, we know about the motion and might is powerful in the open ocean. The main cause the high and low tides is moon’s gravity. Second, we saw another beautiful city underwater. The big coral reefs are like home to the greatest variety of creatures. The sea turtle is one of visitors to the reef. There are places called cleaning stations, those place like human’s SPA, where small wrasse fishes peck and clean up their body. Third, it talked about how technology help research ocean from past to present. Last, after we learn a lot about our ocean, we’ll know the underwater environment is important. Meanwhile we have to prevent pollution and endangered species problems. --

The book is about the open ocean. Each chapter talks about different parts of the ocean and the animals that live in it. The illustration in this book are actual pictures of the underwater world and some watercolor painted charts that show what the ocean floor looks like. I gave this book 4 stars because the information is very interesting and useful in the classroom setting. It reminded me of a time I went snorkeling in Florida. I enjoyed looking at what lied beneath the boat. This book would be a great introduction when discussing habitats with the class. Students can make a web to show all the different parts of the ocean and the animals that live in it. Because of it's content it could be read aloud for K-3. Grades 3-5 can read it independently, depending on their reading level. Grade:3-5, Lexile:760L, Guided Reading Level: V
