It offers a wonderful picture of how clerical work evolved, the ubiquitous presence of scientific management in it, the opportunities and limitations it held for women especially, and the divisions among women based on class, education, age, and marriage. It is notable for a powerful account of the ironies of the efforts of some women to use scientific management to gain more equitable treatment for women and of the ambitions of others (especially in the 1920s, after the suffrage victory gave women more feminist hope) who thought their own skills and hard work could gain them advancement to executive jobs: All these women faced, and many did not see (or avoided looking at), the systemic discrimination that barred women from the most powerful jobs.
