Review # 1 was written on 2016-12-23 00:00:00 Christopher Smith I enjoyed McMurdie's WW2 memoir not so much for a smooth storytelling style, but for the way it captured the sensations and experiences of a young man, disinterested in war, who found himself in the infantry. McMurdie shares excerpts from letters he wrote during his training and service as well as information he's accumulated through his own research and thoughts and opinions at the time of writing. I appreciated the generally positive attitude of the narrative- without glossing over his difficult experiences and the darker side of human nature that he experienced, McMurdie shares his memories without the story becoming bleak.

Review # 2 was written on 2014-01-03 00:00:00 Marie Seisun I tried to overlook the problems I had with the structure and editing of this book to remain objective on the material. I won’t go into a lot of detail but be warned that red apple publishing didn’t do the author any favors with the strange way of structuring parts of the book and downright terrible editing and proofreading. Now the actual material otherwise was more “real” than many memoirs around. The regurgitating verbatim entire letters written home often was dull and sometimes led to nowhere. But the book was saved by the non letter material due to the interesting things this soldier encountered in his service.
