Review # 1 was written on 2011-02-17 00:00:00 Bryan Cline Really interesting read for anyone with an interest in Church History. Starts up with Constantine - 313ish - where Eusebius left off and goes on to about 440AD. Really good picture of life in the Church after the "hostile takeover" by the State and the drastic way life changed from the picture of the church one gets from reading Eusebius' account up until that point. Also interesting as a Sabbath keeper to see four or five very unambiguous statements that the Church in general - with the exception of the Church in Rome and Alexandria - was keeping Sabbath and Sunday as days of worship still at the point this author wrote. Overall a great read. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-03-08 00:00:00 Shannon Adams In spite of its archaic translation, Socrates Scholasticus offers a surprisingly well-balanced treatment of the 130+ years after the conversion of Emperor Constantine. Likely served as a basis for the Ecclesiastical History by Sozomen who wrote on the same era during a similar time period. |
