A very good synopsis of the life and times of a very famous and talented black American who sadly has been forgotten to history by many. The book makes clear Robeson's beliefs, motives, dedication, courage and steadfastness. It also clearly puts Robeson's life in the context of race relations and the Cold War politics of his time in the limelight. This reader found himself wishing Robeson had been less stringent in his dedication and defense of Communism and less naive to the horrors inflicted on the people of the USSR during the reign of Stalin and beyond. Maybe his message would have been less muddled as a result.

3.5 Pretty basic biography speeding through the early parts of his life and career. The meat of the book, and where it gets good, dives into his political philosophies and how they were used against him to sabotage his career. I learned about the Peekskill riots of 1949 for the first time, a shameful omission from our history books.
