It took me longer to finish this book than I had expected due to various disruptions to my reading schedule...but I enjoyed Parmenia Migel's writing. It gives a clear sense of Danish baroness Karen Blixen's influences, starting with the tremendous bond she had with her father and his love of the natural world. His teachings were clearly the spirit that guided her throughout her adventurous lifetime. I found this evocative memoir of literary giant Isak Dinessen's inner strength, ambition and joie de vivre inspiring from beginning to end. Despite often harsh emotional and physical hardships she persevered courageously and adventurously. She had a magnetic effect on others and lived to share her experiences from a worldly perspective, endlessly mining her wells of creative energy.

The first two paragraphs are brilliant, the first two pages are not bad. The rest, or as much as I could bear to read, is overwrought, sentimental drivel. For Karen obsessives only. Maybe not even for them.
