While an important work in that it establishes Bristol's previously downplayed connections to slavery, arguing that early participation in the slave trade and continued ties to West Indian slave labor camps built a foundation of wealth that allowed Bristol to flourish, this book often trails off into recitations of all the information the author could find about a particular person. Such a detailed and thorough examination of the historical source material is of course quite useful for anyone who wants to do further research, but for a casual reader like me (reading about Bristol's history for the very first time), it got rather dull rather quickly. Anyone interested in the topic (including myself, if I had a time machine and could stop Past Me from reading this book) would be much better served reading the author's more recent contributions to the Bristol Museums' website, where the city's connections to the slave trade are engagingly discussed in detail and with illustrations. This can be found here.

This work looks into the social and mental world of 18th-century Bristolians - I enjoyed this because I live in Bristol, so it was fascinating, and crucial, that I learn about the city I live in history with the slave trade especially because Colston was taken down this year!
