Every girl (on SOME level, I admit I'm at the "barely care" level) fantasizes about basking in the Riviera sun while being pampered all while wearing a gold Dolce & Gabbana bikini. That's all fine and dandy, but what I didn't like about these rhymes with a (literal?) facelift was the snobbish tone that often had mommy joking about not having enough money to pay the cook or the housekeeper and sometimes, even, was resentful toward the baby to which these rhymes were even directed. (All keeping in mind that some of the proceeds of this book went to a charity looking to help impoverished children. Makes sense.) While the watercolor illustrations were delightfully reminiscent of old Harper's Bazaar fashion spreads and some of the rhymes were funny enough ("There was an young woman who lived in her Choos" -- how true), I just couldn't get past the first rhyme where the little pig went "wee wee wee all the way home because she had a fat bottom." Sigh. |
