Really interesting study! However, it is not as soul-centered as "Women who run with the wolves" by Pinkola Estes. You have to be prepared to read lots of cultural references that sometimes are not explained. Also, the notes are placed at the end of each chapter, not as footnotes, which makes it a bit more difficult to read. You can definitely see that she admired Jung very much, because half of her study is based on Toni Wolff's structure of the feminine psyche and so many more Jungian ideas and views.

This book made me rethink a lot of the meanings behind the roles of different female historical and mythological figures. It helped me better understand the origins of cultural ideologies and perceived gender roles. I was able to see the cycles of my own life reflected in the writings of this book. Though sometimes I found myself having to trudge through some examples and anecdotes, the ideas an references in this book helped reshape of my feminist points of view.
