Review # 1 was written on 2020-05-04 00:00:00 Steve Thompson 4 stars because the book was reasonably good at achieving its goal, not because I enjoy algebra. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-05-06 00:00:00 Raul Chevel Tracking fashion and eating habits to unravel the changes in 'taste' has been highlight of the book. Although Gronow shows how various thinkers like Simmel and Bourdieu among others trying to solve the antinomy set forth by Kantian aesthetics, the sociological analysis of power dynamics through Bourdieu's 'distinction' seems lacking especially at the end of the book, where ideas get overly fixated and Simmel and his critics. An enjoyable read for anyone interested in the relation between the social and the aesthetic. |
