Review # 1 was written on 2011-04-10 00:00:00 Mark C Lawrence In a "Firing Line" episode called "How Does One Find Faith?", William Buckley Jr. provides an excellent review of the scope of this book: "I propose on this occasion with Malcolm Muggeridge to do something a little unusual. We will devote the hour to exploring the phenomenon, if that is the right word for it, of religious faith. The conversation will be exploratory in nature and probably not adversary, and with very good reason it will focus much more heavily on views and meditations of Malcolm Muggeridge than on my own. There is every reason for this decision, most prominently the superior wit, learning and experience of Mr. Muggeridge; but it is also true that in recent years he has emerged as perhaps the most eloquent English-speaking lay apostle of Christianity, and this he accomplished by encountering faith. When he turned against the devil, the devil was outnumbered." It's difficult to add to that. The book is very conversational insofar as several selections are transcripts from three "Firing Line" episodes and several of Muggeridge's public address - and therefore literally conversational. In this lies the strength and weakness of the book. The strength, as Buckley has stated, "Mr. Muggeridge...in recent years he has emerged as perhaps the most eloquent English-speaking lay apostle of Christianity." Malcolm Muggeridge was a master of the English language and his words make for a pleasure to read and would be worthy of imitation for writers. The weakness is that the book fails to show the depth of his thought and the best of the reflections he had to offer. Perhaps this would be to the advantage of anyone new or inexperienced with theological ideas and what Mr. Muggeridge has to say may very well open their eyes to new ways of thinking about these ideas, but, for the theological junkies, the best this book may offer is a marvelous style.
