This is a fiction children's book about a single mom raising her son. This book is good to use with young children. The book tells the story of a bond between a mother and son. It is a very sweet story that children will enjoy.

163pgs Reconstruction North Carolina. 15 year old Maddie and her family are forced to leave their home on Roanoke Island. While searching for a place to call home, they meet another family of freed slaves and together they travel to a small town where Maddie and her family are able to buy land to farm. Maddie is happy that her family has their own home and land, but longs to travel north and maybe even attend Oberlin College. Maddie loves her family and the orphan girl Tibby that she has taken care of, but she must decide: should she follow her dreams or stay with her family? I would recommend this book to readers (gr 6+) who enjoyed Sound the Jubilee or "Forty Acres and Maybe a Mule" by Harriette Robinet.
