I wasn't familiar with Michael Rumaker, but this turned out to be more of a memoir of his own post-Black Mountain experience in San Francisco than a portrait of Robert Duncan. Honestly I don't know much about, or by, Duncan, so I was fine with that. It was slight, but great. A harrowing picture of being gay at that time in the 'open city' that paradoxically was also kind of a police-state, and the fear, shame, paranoia and constant threat of violence. Rumaker conveys his own journey as a gay man and a writer really well and I loved reading about Vesuvio's and City Lights and Miles Davis, and the circle of writers - Ginsberg, Kryger, Olsen, Levertov etc

It *may* be more about Rumaker than Duncan, but its all cool, really. Stories of Black Mountain. Stories of being gay in the 50's in San Francisco, police state that it was then, living with the fear of being killed, beat up, or arrested, while also trying to make your way as a writer and find your voice, etc. All great reading. Especially the sex. Thank you for the sex. Want to read Black Mountain Days next.
