The Rocky Mountains by Larry Bograd Informational Non-Fiction 64 pages The Rocky Mountains gives a strong overlook on the biodiversity in the area, and shows how all organisms rely on each other to survive. It begins with the Alpine region high up in the mountains, where life is barely sustained, there are no trees and year-long members of this area are few. The next part is written on the slightly lower levels of the Subalpine Forest, where much of the mountain life is situated. Forests are here, giving life to insects and the birds who feed on them. The Montane Forests are next, where the best living conditions are, leading to stiff competitions in the area. This is where many different species try to out fight the other in order to find the area they all want. The Aspen Forests follow even below and this is where most of the larger mammals live and where the migrations patterns are. This is also where bears, moose, and elk will be found. The lowest of the mountain range is the valley. Here, there are few trees and shrubs grow here instead. The animal life consists of mostly herbivores due to the large concentration of fruit producing plants. These may all be separate areas, but this book goes to show how every part is connected in keeping the others stable. One thing that surprised me about this book is how clearly it shows that if something goes wrong in this mountain range, how many things are affected, even to places very far away from the mountain. If something is thrown off balance in one area, it very directly affects the areas surrounding it. Whether it is the area of animal movement for search of food, or the vegetation growth change in climate, there is always something to change the ways of life. However, something many people do not think of is the water supply that goes all around America. You could dump a bucket of water at the top of the mountains and send it all the way to the Pacific or the Atlantic depending on which way you are turned. Pollution on either side on the mountain will pollute the water around the country. Everything was very thoroughly explained and left you with a very satisfied feel at the end of the book.
