I'm going to start by justifying the 3-stars. Career counseling is not my specialty and this text was required reading for a course. That being said, this book could have easily rated higher if I were judging the text on content alone and not taking into consideration my own interest. The first aspect I appreciated about this text is the length. The authors provide all the essential, foundational information on career counseling in a concise manner without any unnecessary information or repetition. Regularly throughout the text the content is applied to clients and scenarios, providing real-world demonstration of skills. I especially appreciated the final chapter, which gives a brief overview of how these concepts and skills may be applied in different settings (elementary schools, universities, OneStop agencies, and of course private counseling practices). Many of the skills presented in this text are fundamental counseling skills so, if nothing else, it is a great refresher and, although the skills are being applied to career counseling, most of the content in the text is applicable to general counseling as well.

Studying for the CPCE isn't the most fun task in the world, and I was really terrified about the career counseling section. I sought this book out, looking for a text that would provide the basics of career counseling. This was written in 2009, so fairly recently, and it is less than 200 pages: double bonus. The first chapter is perhaps the most relevant to the CPCE: it takes the four main theorists of career counseling and explains who they were, what they did, and why it is still important today. PERFECT. I decided to finish the book because it was a quick read and I had the time. After having read it, I HIGHLY recommend it for other counselors to be who feel less than satistfied with their training in career counseling. :)
