Nandys Bedtime is a great bedtime story which has been written with the concept of the stereotypical bedtime routine in mind. We take a day in the life look at Nandy as she prepares for bedtime. It is a typical day in Nandy's home as she plays and cooks with her mum, brushes her teeth with her dad and then reads a bedtime story with her mum before she kisses both parents goodnight and goes to sleep. Lloyd pays attention to the sentimental features of the story such as Nandy kissing her teddy bears before she goes to sleep, Nandy blowing bubbles in the bath and Nandy eating dinner at the table with both parents. Allowing children to identify with the character and her actions which maybe similar to the reader's own household. The illustrations of the book have been produced in colour and spread across two pages which brings the book to life and makes it fun for the children to look at if they are unable to read. Words such as Mummy and daddy again shows that the reader has considered the target audience and uses language perhaps the child maybe familiar with. The story features one sentence per page and the character is of ethnic race showing diversity. However, the ethnicity of the character does not hold boundaries and focuses on the reader being able to connect with the routine rather than the racial factor.

A lovely little picturebook showing a normal day for Nandy, a young girl of colour. Although published in 1982 and with a home fitting more that time than today, I could not help but love the sense of family here. Throughout the story, it is both mum and dad who are part of Nandy's daily life. Mummy cooks, tidies and reads a bedtime story whereas Daddy brushes teeth, plays with Nandy while she is in the bath and prepares her for bed. I would have liked the story from Nandy's point of view and there is a real separation from her and the reader making is feel like detached observers.
