Review # 1 was written on 2021-02-14 00:00:00 James Jacobs "D DUST. Catch some dust. Spread butter on an old plate. Leave it outside for a day. What do you find on the plate?" What a strange downer of a time we lived in back in 1972. What an odd science-hinting heavy-handed moral alphabet book this is. We meant so well. But if were a kid reading this (then or now), I'd be so confused. What do you want me to DO, I'd wail? I'M SORRY! I'm sorry I don't know if I'm supposed to love candles or not! (I'm sorry, Donald Crews, whose photographs are the best part of this.) Our ideas about energy, power, and ugliness feel so much more rounded now than then. Or maybe we are just that much closer to hell? "U UGLY VIEW. An ugly view is not pretty. ...Look around you. What ugly views do you see?" (woo-wee, not the glorious long-hooded Ford Fairlane here!)

Review # 2 was written on 2013-01-08 00:00:00 Michael Whitkofski S is for smoke, U is for ugly view, V is for vacant lot, Z is for zero hour! Absolutely the darkest and most depressing ABC book I've ever seen. The agenda driven photos are all full page and black and white. I don't dispute the importance of the message, but, neither am I for using fear to manipulate children.
