The years under Soviet rule made the Poles even stronger in their desires, actions and beliefs that the only peoples to govern Poland were the Poles. From farmers to city folk, from Gdansk to Niepla, the Poles continued to become stronger in the ways they resisted those who conquered them as well as how they resisted, whether standing in lines for hours for the last shreds of meats to farming as individuals rather that collectives. THE POLES relates the true stories who resisted all attempts to conquer their spirits, and with this resolve, Solidarity began to take hold of all, and with the years, finally defeated their Soviet rulers. Being Polish and having visited so much of Poland, I could not put this book down. To read the stories of those who often times were arrested and put in "camps," brought to life the story of a country that is today free, and governed by those who love Poland the most--the POLES!

I don't remember exactly when I read it; my notes are from 2016-06-26, in a little snippet entitled "America's Dark Summer" in my notes on my phone. The book recounts the events and moods in the capitals of Europe in the Summer of 1939. It is a good reminder that we cannot predict the future. Even those who saw war coming did not see the shocker plot twist--a pact of convenience between Hitler the Nazi and Stalin the Communist--and the scope of the war which came.
