Review # 1 was written on 2012-09-07 00:00:00 Chad Tipton “Wacky Wallflowers Wonder Why Wee Wooly Workhorses Waddle so Weirdly.” (favorite text) I liked the spirit of the book---screw the order, let’s begin from the end. It inspired me for an afternoon to dream up Porteresque lyrics: “You’re so meticulous about upholding the ABCs, While I’m ridiculous sowing my XYZs… My songwriting never got better than that and certainly went worse, but I appreciated the champagne kick to my whimsy. However, I can’t recommend this book with full-throated fervor. Twenty-six different illustrators provided pictures to support the delirious dalliance of words used, so it’s a bit too pick-and-choose for me. My favorite illustration featured parachuting potato-heads leaping from a leviathan skyscraper that reminded me of the Wall Street meltdown, David Foster Wallace, and the Coen Bros. all at once. The images take precedence, so the font size is a bit small on the opposite pages--gigantic blank pages, by the way. Perhaps, the book designer should have placed the images on the left, and the text on the right continuing the backward celebration. The text is arranged playfully, but doesn’t hold my attention visually—so the spelunking of the OED gets lost in the presentation. This is an excellent book to search for in a library with fireplaces on a useless winter day (shout out to downtown Minneapolis, y’all!), and decide for yourself if it merits joining your personal collection.
