Sven Eriksson, one of the most enigmatic and controversial coaches in the history of football, if not in the history of our sport. England's first foreign coach is no stranger to the limelight, journalists, and the media. No other celebrity could direct attention away from David Beckham, the world's most popular footballer, as easily as Eriksson when he was coaching England, whose steamy private life and affairs betrayed his ice-cool face and Swedish temperament. I believe that Lovejoy, who is a competent Sports journalist in his own right, does a good job in this book, titled Sven: The Final Reckoning, of portraying Sven's complex life as coach and husband/lover. Sven Eriksson was heavily criticized in the 2002 World Cup, co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, for his money-making ventures, such as the launch of two PlayStation games at a time when he was avoiding press conferences and journalists in general (it's never just about the football) and his team selection, consistently selecting or keeping unfit players (such as Beckham) over others. To be fair, Eriksson had to deal with a number of unfortunate injuries, most famously that of Steven Gerrard, but still many feel England's golden football generation was robbed of its second World Cup in 2002 to this day. And I, for one, cannot blame them. The main interest of this book lies in the chapters on the 2002 World Cup, Euro 2004, the so-called crisis at the F.A., and 'SvenGate' episode, so the 'Updated' 2004 or later versions are definitely recommended over the 2002 version since most of these chapters are only available in those updated versions. As it stands, Sven: The Final Reckoning is a finely written biography, offering an in-depth insight into one of the most enigmatic coaches in football history, interspersed with the priceless opinions of Eriksson's staff, colleagues, or players at the time. But it is far from a final reckoning of a man currently coaching in China. Sven's career in football is far from a failure, as many aspiring coaches or players have a lot to learn from his examples, methods and, most particularly, all of his mistakes. And Lovejoy's biography of Sven Eriksson is a good place to start.
