A decade or so ago, I decided it was time to seriously consider giving up smoking. I’d had a nasty cough for the best part of a decade and had noticed that I’d started getting out of breath climbing the stairs out of St. Paul’s Underground station. I’d been a smoker for nearly half my life, had no money thanks to the habit now costing more than £5 every day and I wasn’t getting any younger. Not thinking I would have the willpower to quit on my own, given that I’d tried to go cold turkey once several years previously and only lasted three weeks, I thought I’d best have some assistance this time around. I needed something cheaper than a specialist, as smoking a pack a day meant I couldn’t find the lump sum that would require. I wasn’t keen on the idea of nicotine replacement, as patches are more expensive than smoking and the gum is just horrible. I wasn’t registered with a doctor to ask for advice and the Allen Carr books, which often come highly recommended, were out, as I’d tried and failed with those before. It was around this time that I heard some positive things about Susan Hepburn’s “Stop Smoking in One Hour”. This was a course which, like Paul McKenna’s “I Can Change Your Life” style books, offered a method of hypnotherapy which promised to be cheaper than actually seeing a hypnotherapist, but with the same long term success. At the time, the cost of the book was less than the cost of 40 cigarettes, so I figured that even if it only kept me from smoking for 48 hours, I’d still be ahead of the game, at least financially and if it didn’t work at all, I wouldn’t be too much out of pocket for the experience. The program comes in three parts, with one section of the book to be read before listening to the CD and the second to be read a couple of days afterwards. The “One Hour” period referred to in the title relates to the amount of time Hepburn estimates it will take to read the first section of the book and listen to the CD once. She believes that the book will have a 90% success rate at helping people give up smoking, without putting on weight, which is a common result of giving up smoking. The first part of the book is quite similar to the Allen Carr books, in that Hepburn talks up the positive aspects of giving up smoking. These focus mostly on the more obvious gains, the health benefits and the financial savings. The other method of attack in this section is the constant reminder that there are no benefits to smoking and that in all the situations where you think a cigarette is going to help, the opposite is actually true. The book is slightly the longer part of the hour, as the CD has a playing time of only 22 minutes. This is split into a couple of sections, with a 3 minute relaxation session, making sure you’re in the right state of mind to proceed. The longer section of the CD is preparing your for hypnosis and the messages to be imparted whilst in the hypnotic state, which are generally of the type that we can beat smoking and our minds are stronger than the habit we are ready to give up. The final part of the book is the real hard sell, full of statistics regarding the fatal effects of smoking; cancer rates in smokers, risks of heart attacks, that kind of thing. This is the kind of information that really needs to be saved until a couple of days after you’ve given up smoking, to get used to the idea that you don’t smoke any more. I can’t speak for anyone else, but this is the kind of information that, when I smoked, would make me reach for a cigarette. This was a futile attempt, of course, as Hepburn has already explored in the first section of the book. In theory, the book has everything you would need to give up smoking, but it simply didn’t work for me, or it didn’t seem to. I bought the book and followed the instructions and nothing happened. I didn’t feel any different, it didn’t take away my desire to smoke and there was no real reduction in the amount of cigarettes I was smoking. A friend of mine laughed, seeing the book on my bedside table with a packet of cigarettes sitting on top of it and, indeed, that was the way things were. I think that part of the problem was that much of the information that was being presented was nothing new and the bits that were had little effects. The first part of the book was nothing new to me, as I’d read the same information in Allen Carr’s books and felt it was presented better there, as well as better written. The last part of the book was the same as on any anti-smoking information and the kind of thing that always made me want a cigarette. The important part of the book was always likely to be the CD and, as far as I could tell, this just didn’t work for me. I’d never tried hypnotism or anything like this before, so there is a possibility I wasn’t doing it properly. But as I was listening to the CD relatively late at night, it seemed to me that every time I tried to listen, I fell asleep. Ideally, the CD should release you from the hypnotic state at the end, but I found myself waking up the morning after, having seemingly missed the end of the CD. This could, I believe, have been the whole difference between being able to give up smoking at that time and not. However, I am unable to say that the book and CD were a complete waste of time. Some months after giving up on it as a bad job, I made another attempt to give up smoking. This was successful, I have now been a non-smoker for more than 18 months, and I found the attempt to give up smoking a lot easier than I expected. Whilst I would hesitate to give any credit to this book, I will admit that it’s possible that some residual information could have been inside my head and made the later attempt easier than it could have been. The other positive effect of using the CD was that it seemingly helped me to sleep at a time when I was struggling, so it paid for itself in that way, if nothing else. Thanks to many of the auction sites, attempting to give up smoking is now even cheaper than ever. Whilst this book might not have worked for me, different things work for different people, hence the number of different quit smoking products available. If you are considering giving up smoking, a brand new copy of Susan Hepburn’s “Stop Smoking in One Hour” is still around the price of 40 cigarettes, so giving up could be far cheaper than smoking and if it works for just 48-72 hours, you’ve not lost on anything. The reasoning behind my purchase still holds true, even if it didn’t turn out to be the reason behind my success, as I’d hoped.
