Review # 1 was written on 2011-09-18 00:00:00 Paul Thompson This is the first volume (published 1993) of an approximately annual series published by the American Mathematical Society. Coming to it late, I figured that what was new to the mathematical sciences in 1993 would probably still be new to me today, so I started at the beginning with this one. The early issues are in magazine format, authored by Barry Cipra, and the later ones softcover volumes compiled by Dana Mackenzie (author of "The Universe in Zero Words"). Volume 1 contains ten articles on such topics as mathematical biology, computer proofs, geometry in three or more dimensions, prime numbers, and map coloring. The level of the articles is good for me (a graduate in astronomy and statistics); I find that too many popular books on mathematics stop short of explaining the deeper stuff long before it becomes interesting, while papers in mathematics journals are often incomprehensible unless you've already studied the particular field discussed. No problem for me here, though, and I look forward to reading further volumes in the series. |
