Review # 1 was written on 2013-10-24 00:00:00 Jos� Figueira "She found peace in her work, but not in her life." (page 51) This is probably the best we'll get in terms of an English biography of this great silent film star, which is why I'm giving it four stars instead of three. There are many photos, in addition to detailed descriptions of the plots of her major films, some of which no longer survive. There's more biographical information than I've found anywhere else, and the author also contends with Stanley Kwan's biopic, "Actress", which is how many westerners came to know Ruan Ling-Yu. The book is slim, but you get a DVD of "The Goddess" (I wish it was "New Women" or "Little Toys", as "The Goddess" is more readily available and even screens on TCM occasionally.) The author quotes Ruan's co-workers and reprints all of the real and forged suicide notes in full (I think), and reprints much of Lu Xun's editorial on the public's consumption of her death, which I had heard about but never had the pleasure of reading. The author is also conversant in film theory and can explain how 1930's Shanghainese cinema came to be great. The author is obviously enthusiastic about this era of film, as he has written two other biographies Chinese silent film stars, "Jin Yan: The Rudolph Valentino of Shanghai" (featuring a DVD of "The Peach Girl", co-starring Ruan Ling-Yu), and "Wang Renmei: The Wildcat of Shanghai" (featuring a DVD of "Wild Rose").

Review # 2 was written on 2019-09-22 00:00:00 Fahmy Rahim Pretty difficult to put Con Law into a nutshell. Good for research terms.
