For anyone looking for something more concrete than Lies My Teacher Told Me or Teenage Liberation Handbook. This seriously looks at the problems with schools from a perspective that is objective so far as it surveys the history of deschooling thought beginning with Tolstoy and ending with John Holt. This book made me seriously reconsider becoming a teacher. But what I really got out of it was the importance of remembering the why behind schools, which is sadly lacking in education today.
