An excellent resource for my upcoming book on bringing the Israelite captives back to their promised land after the Babylonian captivity. I appreciated that the author differentiated between what was fact and when he "filled in the cracks" using what was known from extra-biblical sources. The back cover calls it his "imaginative reconstruction based on his rich knowledge of Old Testament history." He also identified some characters I only knew by name and gave them logical sequence in the chronology. Again, the back cover says "Ancient names become real persons..." The appendix gives a thorough timeline from 640 to 508 BC., notes, and bibliography.

An interesting read by a scholar from the mid-20th century in the old liberal tradition (in the "JEDP" school of Old Testament criticism). Despite buying into basically all of the historical-critical arguments, Newsome takes the best possible interpretation and makes it come to life. Worth reading, but only after being familiar with other commentaries as well. It would be useful to have something like this from a more traditional Christian scholar...
