Review # 1 was written on 2021-04-14 00:00:00 Samuel Hazziez Not much to say other than this book is a summary of Descartes' theory of everything (cognition aside). In about 200 pages, Descartes presents a unifying theory about the nature of matter, a geometrisation of nature as exemplified in his figures on optical refraction and reflection, a speculative theory of planetary motion which evoked vortices , and, lastly, a description of the human/animal body that aspired to implement Descartes' mechanistic metaphysic in physiology. Moreover, Descates reaffirms the Copernican heliocentric theory, and introduces a concept that would quickly become a crucial component of scientific metaphysics, namely that of a law of nature. Putting aside Descartes' well-known theoretical errors, 'The World' remains an amazing read for anyone with at least a superficial interest in the history of science. Stephen Gaukroger's translation and editorial notes are also superb! |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-09-29 00:00:00 Patricia Bohram A revolutionary victory over the Classical world-feeling which had power over the Western sciences and academies through medieval Aristotelian Scholasticism. Reinterprets the world as a struggle between competing forces under a baroque monotheistic God whose will has infinite spatial power. |
