Review # 1 was written on 2018-11-07 00:00:00 Vance Cook Cerebrum is a highly relevant and interesting compendium of articles on emerging topics in brain science. Despite what can sometimes be difficult subject matter for the layperson, Cerebrum is an easy read. For me personally, this book did not go into sufficient enough detail on any of the subjects to blow me away, or make feel as if I learned anything new. However, I do recommend Cerebrum to anyone interested in getting a very broad overview of what neuroscience has to say about our everyday lives. For those who follow this research consistently, there is nothing new or mind-blowing in Cerebrum and particulars are kept to a minimum. If you are a skeptical person who likes to see all the raw data, citations and statistics, this is not the book for you. If you want to learn about how society and biology overlap, this is a good start.

Review # 2 was written on 2010-12-26 00:00:00 Mclaren Mak Disappointingly slight volume of the latest brain research. None of it is earth-shaking, and much of it is rather narrow in focus. I guess that's the nature of a good deal of academic research, but I expected more from neuro-scientists. For example, one finding is that training in the arts improves your ability to focus. Nice to have proven, but not exactly startling. One discussion centered on how decision-making degrades with age, and asked the question, how can we help protect our senior citizens from getting swindled? That one seemed patronizing in the extreme, since people of all ages get swindled daily.
