I started reading this for a few days and then set it aside because of health issues due to a diagnosis of Meniere's disease. I picked this book up again the next day and was surprised to learn of Alan Shepard's own experience with Meniere's, which took him out of the running for the moon landing. Was excited to hear that he did an experimental surgery that cured his hearing problem and vertigo! Life is funny sometimes. Of the thousands of books from which to choose, I opted to read this one, which was uniquely encouraging at an unusual time. Another good biography by Janet & Geoff Benge.

I didn't even know who Alan Shepard was until I read this with my mom. He has a really amazing story of being the first American in space and walking on the moon. Not only is his story unique and full of extreme adventure and determination, but this book is also fairly well written. Descriptive words are used frequently as well as much suspense. If you want to learn more about Alan Shepard while enjoying an action-filled story, read this book.
