A beautiful book with lovely photographs of the plays of South Africa's most experimental, daring and visionary theatre director, Brett Bailey. Bailey, by including a background on the formation of each play, and supplying notes from his workbook, takes you through the processes that he and his dynamic group of actors went through. Bailey's plays were controversial, in-your-face, mysterious and haunting, and broke down the barriers between audience and performer. I liked his take on the difference between theatre in Europe and that here, and illustrates the difficulty I have always had with visual arts in South Africa trying to ape that of Europe: "In the last quarter of 1999, I began my MA at Das Arts - an innovative and exciting Amsterdam theatre laboratory - where I was exposed to different, trendier and colder levels of perception and expression. Here the emphasis was firmly on Concept. I found this interesting, but cannot say that much of what I was exposed to there had an influence on my work that followed: a lot of it seemed not to apply in warmer latitudes."
