Review # 1 was written on 2019-08-10 00:00:00 Chris Miss This guide, though some years old, is still very relevant and useful. Some favourite George Sand bits: "210km/130mi starting from La Chatre. Journey through the landscapes which inspired George Sand's novels from the Vallee Noire to the Creuse Valley, from Nohant Chateau to Gargilesse, from the Crozant ruins to La Motte-Feuilly." "La Châtre: This tour wanders through the countryside that served as backdrop for Sand's novels set in rural Berry. Their settings have changed but little in the past century. Still "vivid and sombre in colour . ..the melancholy far distant views". "Boischaut: This district lies between the Cher and the Creuse, its clay soils overlapping the neighbouring Marche province. This is an area of small farms where the emphasis is on livestock rearing, in particular the Charolais breed, and sheep. The countryside, crisscrossed with many rivers, farms and gardens, is much the same as when described by the novelist George Sand." |
