Review # 1 was written on 2010-01-13 00:00:00 Tom Frost I originally picked this book from the new shelves because it is about a breast cancer survivor. Imagine my delight to find that her home is in Kansas, specifically near Lawrence, which is my home town! Ms. Mirriam-Goldberg is the current Poet Laureate of Kansas; she describes her journey with breast cancer, the decisions she had to make about treatment, surgery, and her family of husband and young children. Added to to the mix is her passion as a bioregionalist, passion with healing and her contribution to the new genre of narrative medicine. I found myself walking with her in Lawrence, and with her on her journey with breast cancer. As I walked with her, I relived my own journey with breast cancer. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting an immensely readable and honest story of the power of a woman's facing terrible decisions, but emerging victorious.

Review # 2 was written on 2009-11-09 00:00:00 Kathy Wallace A memoir about facing life and death after a diagnosis of breast cancer. Mirriam-Goldberg tells it like it was for her, including moments of grace and community, moments of fear and confusion, moments of rationality and extreme irrationality, and everything in between. Despite all of the hardships that she chronicles, I came away somewhat soothed by book - after all, she survives and continues with her life, in all its beauty and complexity.
