This book is a Journal and filled with pre-Civil War American History. For anyone writing in this time period there is wonderful information about daily life, how people traveled, what foods they ate, where they bought supplies, food, clothing, shoes, equipment, what things cost. It tells about their money. What really surprised me was how much and how far they traveled. Nearly all travel was on rivers or canals. This man traveled on river paddle boats. The book has an appendix in the back that tells about all these boats that he named, how big they were when and where they were built, their size and what happened to them. Very interesting. If you like history, you will love this one.

Oh dear. I'm well into the book, and I have learned 1) more about Zipperstein than Rosenfeld and 2) that Zipperstein's effusive gratitude to his copy editor for her great work is undeserved. I will let you know what I think about his (Steven's) second marriage in a later update.
