Review # 1 was written on 2019-09-01 00:00:00 coy knight Fascinating memoir of a woman's battle with basal cell cancer on her face. This classy lady rarely feels any self pity. A very inspiring book. Like many teens in the 1920's and 30's Carolyne received x-ray treatment for acre. 90% of these people have developed skin cancer. Her cancer kept recurring for many years. In 1974 alone, she went to Dr. Mohs in Madison, Wisconsin ten times and had 2 or 3 removed each time. He was the world's greatest skin cancer surgeon. Later she met a Dr. Klein of Buffalo, a dermatologist who uses chemo therapy creams to bring out and dissolve the small tumors. "The most important thing I learned about living with disfigurement was that how others reacted to me was a direct reflection of how I reacted to myself. If I seemed unconcerned about my disfigurement, others were unconcerned. Friends and family will be sorry, even grieved that the patient has met with calamity. When he's obviously miserable, they share his misery, and can be enslaved by it. but when he's happy, others are released to be happy too. Unsure of how to deal with a medical situation, people naturally will take cues on how to act from the patient." |
