It's incorrect to say that I have read this book (and shelved it and finished it). I read it regularly. I look at it regularly. If I'm feeling miserable, stuck at home (Covid), unable to travel by train up north... I pick up Tony Waltham's book and, in mind at least, I'm somewhere else. The photographs are wonderful - one on every page. The text is accessible. You don't need to have a geology degree to get to grips with it - just a love of rocks and landscape. The content is interesting - everything from building stones to mining, and, every so often, there are extra bits that deal with the formation of some of the Dales' most loved features. I love the Dales. I love the book. It's my favourite piece of non-fiction. I'm so glad I have it.

The book is exactly what it claims to be: a photographic record of the 1906 San Fransisco earthquake and fire. It is basically a picture book, but the pictures are beautiful. There are some "before" pictures of the city, which helps drive home the point of the severity of the devastation with the "after" pictures. Text is pretty sparse, but it does present some interesting facts. A graph is provided showing the $474,211.03 sent by foreign governments to the relief effort, broken down by nation. Interestingly, some very wealthy European countries were at the bottom of the list (Germany sent $50, England $6,570.88) while emerging countries sent much more (Japan sent $244,960.10, China sent $40,000).
