Talk about heartbreaking. But then, Europeans aren't exactly known for good treatment of natives of other lands that they invaded and exploited. The collection of stories is from the views of four different women through two hundred years of Australian history, and a painful glimpse into the way that the native Australians were abused and exploited by foreigners.

Despite living in Australia in 2020 knowing exactly how things are to turn out for these four aboriginal women, the way their stories are told left me totally unable to put the book down. Their stories are heartbreaking, inspiring, infuriating, and eye-opening all at once. Hyllus Maris has left me feeling a much deeper connection to both the Indigenous peoples, and the country.
