Review # 1 was written on 2016-01-06 00:00:00 Christopher Miller Interesting but skims the surface of a long life. One of the criticisms frequently leveled at Santmyer's ...And Ladies of the Club is that it's homophobic. Given that, one wonders why this biographer merely says, almost in passing, that Santmyer met a woman with whom she became such great friends that they lived together for the next 30-odd years, even entering the same nursing home. One wonders if there isn't more of a story there. Other events seem similarly elided. |
Review # 2 was written on 2011-08-31 00:00:00 Paul I Price jr Goldensohn's biography of Bishop is one of the first, and it provides some good insights into both her life and her poetry. Like so many literary biographies it says as much about its author's obsessions as Bishop's, and that's okay. |
