In aftermath of Brown v. Board of Education, one of the great injustices in American education has become a new type of segregation for young minority children. It is frightening to think of how labeling students using coded language allowed for schools and districts around the world to effectively challenge the landmark case and maintain the status quo. Full of the general and repeated statistics regarding race and special education: African Americans make up only about 11% of the population in the U.S., yet about 46% of students receiving special education services. African American males are more than twice as likely to be labeled as needing special services for any of a host of reasons. Special education services are almost entirely rooted in IQ tests which are inherently biased and subject to data that are ultimately not aligned/correlated to a students intellectual capabilities. Still, even if the stats aren't surprising, it provides a substantial grounding in a nationwide problem that can only be addressed when teachers are cognizant of the injustice.
