A practical approach to using animal totems in modern Paganism, magic and spirituality. This book is mainly composed of a range of ideas and advice on how one might practice animal-based magic and spirituality; and well-reasoned opinions on some related issues. For a non-academic book it seems well researched in the discussion areas and makes extensive use of personal experience. I found the discussion of cultural appropriation particularly useful as it cites specific examples and sources as well as making a thorough explanation of the issues in clear language. I also appreciated the value placed on environmentalism and less well-known totems. I noticed a definite maturing in tone and ideas between 'DIY Totemism' and 'Fang and Fur, Blood and Bone' which was written a couple of years earlier. While I enjoy a conversational tone in non-fiction, I found the writing style even in 'DIY Totemism' sometimes still seemed too informal for a published book, though it would have been fine in a blog post. Although it incorporates research and some other people's experiences this book is largely driven by Lupa's own experience and reflection. Since the practice of neototemism is so varied and undefined, I think a book that is grounded in one person's practice and reaches out to others is exactly what's needed. Lupa does a good job of making sure the practical ideas leave room for personal adaptation. I look forward to catching up with more of Lupa's current bibliography and seeing these ideas grow further.

Can't say enough good things about this book. Unlike many other 'totemism' books, this one makes it clear that this is in fact a neo-pagan practice The author tells a lot of history/current practices, discusses Therianism, gives reviews of other materials, and includes a few essays by other authors too. Great textbook for beginners, or for anyone.
