The essays feel very strained to fit under the heading of "Hair": some are too short & resemble abstracts, some have ragged stylistic edges that make the piece hard to digest, and some tackle bland topics & render them overwrought. Hair is somehow associated with race. Homosexual men think about their hair. Salons and barbershops were places to gather and socialize. Duh duh duh. Nice cover, though.

I read this because I had to review it for the library I work at. Some of the essays are interesting as scholarly looks at the social and cultural importance of hair. Some of the essays are better than others, but if you're interested in cultural perceptions of hair and gender or historical attitudes towards hair, I'd recommend it.
