"The Dove" written by Dianne Stewart and illustrated by Jude Daly tells the story of a girl and her grandmother who are struggling to make ends meet after a terrible flood. Set in South Africa this is a heart warming story about triumph over adversity and provides a window into how other cultures live. The story offers good opportunities for guided reading at a KS1 level and children will be able to talk about how the characters are feeling and the differences between the lives of those in the story and their own. The book is nicely illustrated with pictures clearly depicting what life is like in KwaZulu-Natal and this again provides good opportunities for discussion. I think books such as this, that offer young children a chance to start understanding how people live and the events (often sad) that shape their lives, are extremely important. The way The Dove introduces these concepts in a non patronising yet sensitive way should help teachers in their aims to nurture children into globally, socially conscious and caring young adults.

Bertie wants to do things just like daddy, but Bertie is too small. Daddy reassures him that he'll be able to do all these things when he is older.
